Flower and Garden Show in Redlands

Flowergarden 057 This weekend is the 97th annual Redlands Horticultural Society's Flower and Garden Show, 2 pm - 6 pm, Saturday, April 18th, 10 am - 5 pm, on Sunday - at the ESRI Cafe, 370 New York Street, in Redlands. Adults - $8, children under 13, free.

In addition to all the flowers on display at the ESRI cafe, the price of admission includes a self-guided tour of local gardens and admission to the RHIS Uncommon Plant Sale at Prospect Park. Judging from past years' experience, this usually means a rare opportunity to see some lovely home gardens and unusual plant specimens up close.

Not to mention, maybe buying one or two from the plant sale, for your own garden. ahem.

Giving Charitably - and Locally - Supports Arts and Artists In Our Community

There's still time left in the year, if you're considering donating to charity to take advantage of income tax breaks - why not donate to a locally-based organization? Here are a couple in support of local arts that you might consider:

October 026 ARC School of Hope is a day program for developmentally disabled adults, that's been serving and promoting the independence of developmentally disabled local citizens since 1952. Gallery 7-9-6 is a division of ARC School of Hope - it's an art program that assists disabled enrollees in creating, exhibiting and selling their artwork. ARC School of Hope is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, and donations are gratefully welcomed with a receipt for your tax records. If you have any late holiday gift-giving or decorating needs, consider purchasing one of the many creative artworks exhibited and sold at the site - the purchase price of each piece sold goes directly to the disabled artist who created it - there are many unique paintings and sculptures to choose from! Also, if you're clearing closet space this New Year, donations of still usable art supplies and tools can help these artists continue creating their artwork into the next year. ARC School of Hope, 796 East Sixth Street, San Bernardino, CA 92410. Hours: M-F, 9am - 3:30 pm (closed major holidays), (909) 884-6484.

August Farmer's Market 160 The Margaret Clarke Art Education Endowment Fund (MCAEEF), established by the  Redlands Art Association (RAA), is also a  501(c)3 non-profit organization, that provides scholarships to RAA art classes, helps provide children's art classes at the art center; scholarships, awards and grants for high school art departments in the local area; the Art in Public Schools Project, and grants to individual artists. A donation to MCAEEF will help ensure arts will continue to flourish in our community. As Picasso's quote on the outside of the RAA building reminds us, 'Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life" and in my opinion, it helps keep communities happy, healthy and lovely for years to come. The RAA gallery features the artwork of many local artists, and is volunteer operated - open Mon - Sat, 10am - 5pm (closed Sun and major holidays), at 215 East State Street, Redlands, CA  92373. (909) 792-8435.

Redlands Christmas Parade

The annual downtown Redlands Christmas parade will begin at 6:00 pm tonight, Saturday, December 6th. Dress warm and get there early to find a good viewing spot. To see the parade sponsors' downloadable/printable map of the parade route, click here. From what I've read, for safety reasons, there's no candy throwing this year, but I'm sure there will be plenty of other fun things to see.

I wonder if we'll see any of these Market Night regulars there...

The Wizard of Oz

Wizardofoz_4

A sneak peek from the dress rehearsal of The Wizard of Oz, at the Redlands Bowl.

If you'd like to go somewhere over the rainbow to escape the summer heat - just follow the yellow brick road down to the Redlands Bowl, this Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening, July 24 -26, 2008, when the local production of "Wizard of Oz,' starts at 8:15 p.m.

However, keep in mind, the annual musical production is one of the nost popular events at the Bowl, so come early for best seating (try for at least half an hour before - even earlier if you can!) - for either the stadium seating or for BYOB - 'bring your own blanket,' for the small, grassy areas.

Though I've enjoyed all of the produtions I've seen at the Bowl over the years, I was particularly impressed by this year's dress rehearsal on Tuesday night. The costuming and staging are exceptional for a local production of this size. It has all that you've come to expect from having seen the iconic movie version - plus some fun musical numbers that you didn't get to see in the movie. The kids I viewed it with, definitely enjoyed it -- we liked it so much, we're going back again...

Cost: Whatever you can afford - donation bowls are passed at the beginning of the show. Though there isn't an admission charge - producing the play does cost money for costuming, lights and so much more - so please consider giving as generously as you can afford.

Visit the Redlands Bowl website, for additional information.

The theater has arena-style seating (looking down on either side of the stage), so pretty much any seat has a good view of the action on stage.

A Rolling Stone - Beads, Not Rock & Roll

Though I do think this store rocks :-)

The Rolling Stone Bead shop in Redlands, is celebrating its second anniversary with a storewide, sale Rollingstonebeads_2 (check with the store for applicable dates and more information).

Not only does it offer any number of beads and beading supplies for sale, they also have handcrafted jewelry, purses, windchimes and more. I love to look through their "bag your own beads bin," it feels like finding buried treasure (the bags are small, but the beads are so pretty!). Though it's fun to pick up one of their shopping trays and browse through their selection of other unique, individually priced beads, too.

They also offer beading classes, and according to their website, even beading birthday parties for kids can be arranged through them. Click on their link here for more photos and store information.

A Rolling Stone Bead Store, 320 E. Citrus Ave, Redlands. (909) 798-2282. Open 10 am - 6 pm, Monday - Saturday.

Children's Summer Festival Workshops & Final Week at the Bowl

Redlands1_002 The Vanaver Caravan, who performed at Friday night's Redlands Bowl concert (which was toe-tapping, hand-clapping, good), will present a free Children's Workshop this Saturday morning, for kids, ages 4 to 10 years old - at the Redlands Community Center, 111 W. Lugonia, Redlands, from 10 am to 10:45 am.

Judging by the great Friday night performance of the Vanaver Caravan, and the lucky local kids who worked with them earlier in the week (joining them on stage for a couple of dance numbers), these performers have a way of making traditional American folk music and dance really come alive, for kids and adults alike. Check out their website to learn more about these amazing performers.

After Saturday's workshop, there's only one more Redlands Bowl Children's Summer Festival Workshop left to come. Coming up on Tuesday, August 29th, will be the Quartetto Gelatto, a quartet of many flavors :). That workshop will be from 3 - 3:45 pm, at the First Congregational Church, 2 West Olive Avenue in Redlands.

After the Tuesday Children's Workshop, Quartetto Gelatto will be performing at 8:15 pm, that evening, at the Bowl. This Tuesday is also the last chance of the summer to come out for the community sing that precedes the concert, at 7:20 pm.

The final performance of the 2007 Redlands Bowl Summer Concert series, will be at 8:15 pm, on Friday, August 24. The Redlands Symphony Orchestra, Frank Fetta, conductor, will present a "Centennial Celebration" tribute to 100 years of the University of Redlands.

There is no admission charge to either the Redlands Bowl concerts or the Children's Summer Festival Workshops. At that price, why not give your kids the gift of music?
