Welcome to the arrowhead! One resident's quest for the best in the Inland Empire (San Bernardino/Riverside counties in Southern California). A roadtrip of sorts.
After the children's bookstore, we all need to stretch our legs a bit, so let's go visit a park.
This is Sylvan Park, in Redlands. On the corner of University and Colton Avenues (from the I-10 east, take the University off-ramp, turn left - heading north) and go one short block up towards the University of Redlands. Voila! The park is that large green area filled with trees and picnic tables, on your right.) There are lots of picnic areas - unless it's the Fourth of July! That's when this park is packed, for the hometown 4th of July parade that circles around it; followed by
the fireworks display at the University stadium.
Other days of the year, there's usually lots of room to spread out, let the kids run around on the playground. Some picnic areas have small bbq grates, though most people just bring their own.
Restrooms are available, and at least relatively clean but, as with most parks, you still would probably rather wait till later. Why do park restrooms never have soap anymore? I would think the health benefits would make it worth the expense. As park facilities go, comparatively, these aren't bad (I've been in much worse). Still, I would never send a child into any of them alone. You can't be too careful nowadays.
There's one covered picnic table area, that's often "reserved" early on weekends, by large parties. Still there's lots of shade, thanks to the tall, tall trees. I'm betting some of them are close to a century old, since the park has been around nearly that long.
There's also a small rose garden that's beautiful to walk through in the spring and autumn (they're not blooming well in the heat right now - so I'll add a pic of those later).
Another feature of this park - the small stone bridges crossing the Zanke - a little rivulet of water, that runs most of the year through the park (but again - not in this heat right now!). The bridges look like storybook bridges to me.
I think I'll just lie here in the grass and daydream awhile. Did you bring any books with you? What are you reading now?
